'Driving the Body Back,' published by UI Press, reflects human lives,
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa Public Radio commentator and Iowa State University
professor Mary Swander poetically narrates a collection of short stories
about rural life in America in "Driving the Body Back," published
by the University of Iowa Press.
Throughout the 96-page collection, Swander paints the lives of people
with titles such as 'Jim,' a story about a man's undying spirit that later
exacts revenge on his killer. She follows 'Jim' with similar sensitive
stories such as 'Maud' and 'Ed.'
"From the hard task of wrestling sustenance from the soil to the
hard fact of thawing the ground for burial, Swanders concerns affect us
all. If you complain that poets write only for themselves and other poets,
this may well be the book for you," says the Los Angeles Times.
Swander has written and edited numerous books, including "Out of
this World," "Succession," and "Heaven-and-Earth House."
"Driving the Body Back" is available in bookstores for $12.95
or directly from the UI Press by calling (773) 568-1550.
