'Debt-proof your holidays': WRAC-sponsored seminar to be Oct. 28

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- If you want to take charge of your budget and avoid overspending during the upcoming holiday season, you may wish to attend a special seminar co-sponsored by the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC).

"Debt-Proof Your Holidays: The Basics of Budgeting, Credit, and Privacy" will be Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hills Bank in Coralville. There is no charge for the seminar. Tips on creating and keeping a yearlong spending plan, using credit wisely and protecting yourself from fraud, will be presented by Jan Garkey, Iowa State University Extension specialist. Co-sponsors of the seminar include Hills Bank, Iowa Women's Foundation and the UI Women's Center.

Participants will learn alternatives to expensive gift buying, examine holiday activities with their values in mind, commit to setting limits for spending, as well as share and gather ideas from other participants. Be prepared to do "plastic surgery" with your credit cards, and learn the right way to cancel the cards that you don't need. Finally, participants will learn about when it's appropriate to give out your Social Security number. Knowing your rights can help protect you from "true name fraud" -- the fastest growing type of financial fraud in this country.

Give yourself a present before the holidays. Call the Iowa Women's Foundation at (319) 337-4222 to register for this free workshop to "Debt-Proof Your Holidays."
