Local student joins University Symphony at University of Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- (Name) of (hometown) has been selected to play with the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra for its concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus.

(Name), a (class standing) at the UI, plays (instrument) with the orchestra.

Players rotate in and out of the University Symphony throughout the academic year. This gives orchestral experience to the greatest possible number of students at the UI School of Music. Thus it is common for students to be selected to appear in a concert after the orchestra opens its season in September.

The Oct. 21 concert, directed by William LaRue Jones, will be free and open to the public. Horn player Kristin Thelander will be the featured soloist in Jacobs' Concerto for Horn and strings. Other works on the program will be Adams' "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No 1.

A UI music alumnus, Jones joined the faculty of the School of Music in 1997 as director of the University Symphony and director of orchestral studies. He replaced James Dixon, the director of the orchestra for more than 40 years, who retired at the end of the 1996-97 academic year. Prior to joining the UI faculty, Jones was the founding music director/administrator of the internationally recognized Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. He is conductor of the Bloomington (Minn.) Symphony and has appeared as a guest conductor with professional orchestras around the world.
