New support group aims to help women performers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- If you want to hit the big time as a performer or if you simply want to be more comfortable performing at a local coffeehouse, the Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) has a support group for you.

The group, "Women Performers," is designed to help women at all stages in their performing careers, whether they are musicians, poets, prose writers or performers of other forms of musical or written expression. Participants will get help in three areas of performance: the written word, the sound of the performance, and the performance itself, says Joy Mills, group facilitator.

Meetings will be each Tuesday for six weeks, beginning Oct. 20, from 8 to 9 p.m. at WRAC, 130 N. Madison, Iowa City.

"We will use improvisational and performance exercises as well as provide critiques of written work. The group's goal is to challenge women to become true performers -- to be able to project the image of their choice while they are on stage," Mills says.

For more information or to register for the group, call the Women's Center at (319) 335-1486.
