Climbing course begins Oct. 24 at UI
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The popularity of climbing has, well, "climbed"
in the past few years triggering the "Learn to Climb Program"
at the University of Iowa. Sponsored by the UI recreational services department,
the program begins Saturday, Oct. 24 and will be offered every Saturday
through Dec. 12 in the UI Climbing Gym in the Field House. Participants
in the program will need to attend only one three-hour session on any Saturday
between Oct. 24 and mid-December to learn to "sport climb" in
a safe environment. Upon completing the program, participants will be
eligible to use the Climbing Gym in the UI Field House on their own.
Children ages 12-17 can register for the youth sessions from 9 a.m.
to 12 p.m.; adult sessions will be from 1-4 p.m. The program fee is $20
per person. For more information or to register, contact the recreational
services office (Room E216) in the UI Field House (319) 335-9293.
Participants will learn how to use a climbing harness and climbing rope,
how to use handholds and footholds as well as proper climbing signals.
