Rhetoric seminar details 19th century countries' sovereignty efforts Oct. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Project on the Rhetoric of Inquiry (POROI) will host a seminar on the sovereignty efforts of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, the Philippines, and Hawaii in the late 19th century and two University of Iowa professors' works on the topic. The seminar will be Thursday, Oct. 15 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Brewery Square, 107 North Linn Street in Iowa City.

The POROI seminar, "Interdisciplinary Conversations When and Why do they Work, Afterthoughts on the 1998 Obermann Summer Research Seminar," will be led by UI professors Jane Desmond, associate professor of American studies and women's studies, and Virginia Dominguez, professor of anthropology and director of the Center for International and Comparative Studies.

Desmond and Dominguez presented a paper on the countries' sovereignty efforts at the faculty seminar this past June. The two are collaborating on a larger, first-of-its-kind work on the subject, which will include research by scholars from the noted countries.
