UI researcher receives $100,000 grant from March of Dimes

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Rebecca Hartley, assistant professor of anatomy and cell biology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, has received a $100,000 new investigators award from the March of Dimes.

The special grant, called the Basil O'Connor Starter Scholar Research Award, will fund two years of Hartley's research, beginning Feb. 1. Hartley will use the funds to study the regulation of the cell cycle in the early embryo.

"This work is clinically relevant both for early developmental anomalies and for cancer since it studies the basic regulatory mechanisms that set up and drive the adult cell cycle," Hartley said.

After two years Hartley could apply for a normal March of Dimes grant to fund continued research in the area of cell cycle regulation in the early embryo.
