UI pharmacy student receives national scholarship

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Ryan P. Frerichs of Akron, a third-year pharmacy student at the University of Iowa, has been selected to receive a $1,000 Paul B. Slater National Competition Scholarship from the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation.

Ryan, son of Robert and Iola Frerichs of Akron, is one of 15 national competition scholarship recipients for 1998. The Slater scholarship is awarded from a bequest to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation by Past Grand President and Foundation Life Trustee Paul B. Slater.

Frerichs currently serves as president of the Iowa Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at the UI. The fraternity is represented on 256 campuses with more than 13,000 undergraduate members. Every Sigma Phi Epsilon undergraduate member was eligible to apply in the scholarship competition. More than 100 applications were received and judged in areas of academic achievement, campus and fraternity leadership, and financial need.
