Cancer survivors celebrate life

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- National Cancer Survivors' Day is a day set aside to celebrate the life of everyone living after the diagnosis of cancer. This year, Iowa survivors will gather at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Sunday, June 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. for the Fourth Annual Celebration of Life.

Both adult and pediatric survivors of cancer, along with their family members and friends, are invited to the celebration that is being held on the Colloton Pavilion Patio.

At 2:30 p.m. Kim O'Meara, a breast cancer survivor, will give a keynote speech. Kim joined other survivors in climbing Mt. Aconcagua in the Andes Mountains in February 1995 and believes "until there is a cure, there's a climb."

Free T-shirts will be given to cancer survivors, and a door-prize drawing will take place at 3:45 p.m. In the spirit of renewed life, a butterfly release is scheduled for 4 p.m. Patty Ankrum and Michael Maas will provide music, and children can have their faces painted by clowns.

In the event of rain, the celebration will move to the Clinical Cancer Center at UIHC.
