Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic Tees Off for Fourth Year

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Fourth Annual Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic to support women's athletics and cancer research will be Sunday, June 28 in Iowa City.

Tee-off for the two-person best-shot tournament will start at 7:30 a.m. at the Finkbine Golf Course. Registration cost is $60 per person, which includes greens fees, a cart, prizes and a cook-out. Proceeds from the tournament will go to the University of Iowa Foundation to support the Kris Rogers Memorial Athletics Scholarship Fund and the Kris Rogers Memorial Cancer Fund.

The two athletes receiving a partial scholarship from the Rogers Scholarship Fund in 1998-99 will be Tammy Utley, a junior from Fort Dodge who plays on the Iowa women's softball team, and Cedar Falls freshman Randi Peterson, a member of the Iowa women's basketball team.

Kris Rogers was a Regina High School athlete in Iowa City before enrolling at the UI, where she excelled in softball and basketball from 1976 to 1982. Her other credits included playing on the Big Ten Conference All-Star Softball Team in 1978 and being an alternate for the first Pan American Games. She also was inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 1992.

Rogers, who became a Cedar Rapids businesswoman after graduating from the UI in 1983, died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 36. Contributions made in her memory by family, friends and the UI Women's Athletics department helped create the permanent scholarship at the UI Foundation. The Rogers family of Iowa City helped coordinate the golf tournament.

To register for the golf event, call Dorothy Rogers at 319-338-4371 or write to her at 1169 Hotz Ave., Iowa City, Iowa, 52245-3319. Deadline to enter is June 12.

To support the Kris Rogers Athletic Scholarship Fund, or the Rogers Cancer Fund, contact Jana Egeland, assistant director of development for women's intercollegiate athletics at the UI Foundation, 319-335-3305. The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of private support for all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff members work with the university's administration, colleges and departments to set fund-raising priorities, expand the base of contributors, provide stewardship to multiply funds already raised, and conduct a variety of activities and fund-raising campaigns that advance the UI's institutional goals.
