Multicultural Graduation and Recognition Banquet set for May 14

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The eighth annual University of Iowa Multicultural Graduation and Recognition Banquet will be Thursday, May 14 in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. The event, which is open to the public, begins with a social at 6:30 p.m. followed by a dinner and awards ceremony at 7 p.m.

The Multicultural Recognition Banquet offers the UI and its students something special. Established in 1990 by the Graduate College, Special Support Services and Men's Athletics, the event is designed to publicly recognize minority students receiving professional, graduate, and undergraduate degrees from the UI. Each of the UI's 10 colleges selects a student to receive the Dean's Leadership Award. In addition, students who have been identified by various departments as leaders and role models for their peers are awarded the Student Leadership Award. Awardees are often officers in student organizations, committee memberships, or social groups.

"The banquet is unique in a lot of ways," says Lew Montgomery of Opportunity at Iowa, the UI office charged with encouraging and coordinating the recruitment of underrepresented faculty and students. "It's more than just an awards ceremony because it offers our students of color an opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments, but it is also our way of saying 'Thanks for choosing Iowa to pursue your education.'"
