Discussion group will focus on women writers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A new discussion group for women and men will meet each Monday for six weeks beginningApril 6 to examine the work of women writers as well as the impact that gender has on writing and the literary canon.

"Women Writers in Our Lives" is the name of the group sponsored by the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center. The group will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Women's Center, 140 N. Madison, Iowa City.

Group members will decide on a list of six to 10 writers whose work they wish to read during the six-week session. The goal is for members to learn about women writers that they have not previously read.

"I believe reading is essential to learning, and I believe that learning about women's contributions to literature is essential to reading," said Soraya Jacqueline Fata, group facilitator. "We will allow a few minutes for individual writing at the end of each session because it is almost impossible to spend time talking about writing and not have the urge to write ourselves," Fata remarked.

"No previous knowledge of women writers is necessary," she added. "Just bring a willingness to learn and discuss and discover."
