UI library catalog now available for searches via World Wide Web

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Libraries' on-line catalog, along with more than 50 million items from a dozen of the world's largest research libraries, can now be searched via the World Wide Web. This collection of resources is available through the CIC Virtual Electronic Library Catalog, which is one of the many projects of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation, composed of the Big Ten institutions plus the University of Chicago.

This new virtual catalog allows users to search for items at a single participating library or to search all the libraries collectively for information on a specific topic. The Virtual Electronic Library Catalog ( includes information about 56 million volumes and approximately 500,000 serial subscriptions. The entire UI on-line library catalog, LCAT on OASIS, is included in the virtual catalog.

The initial development of the Virtual Electronic Library Catalog searching system was made possible with the support of a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The participating libraries will continue to enhance and expand the system.
