Business and Liberal Arts placement office goes on-line

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The days of searching through jobs posted on the University of Iowa's Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office bulletin boards are over.

The UI Placement Office has teamed with JOBTRAK Corporation (, one of the nation's largest on-line job listing services, to provide students and alumni the ability to search for jobs at any time and from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

Unlike publicly accessible career databases, the UI service has a unique and password-protected database on JOBTRAK that can only be accessed by UI students and alumni. This security allows employers to target their recruitment efforts to UI students and alumni, assuring them a highly qualified, motivated pool of candidates.

The service is provided for free to students and members of the UI Alumni Association; employers pay a nominal fee to post their positions.

"The Internet has allowed us to connect students and alumni with employers in ways that we could only imagine a few years back," says Laurie Dufoe, associate director of the UI Placement Office. "Our students are extremely comfortable with the World Wide Web, and utilizing our JOBTRAK database has become their primary method of searching for employment. In the last couple months we have seen 1,254 students and alumni visit JOBTRAK to review listings."

"According to a recent survey by the Student Monitor, finding a job is the number one concern among college students and recent graduates," said Connie Ramberg, president of JOBTRAK. "We are thrilled to be working with the University of Iowa in providing this valuable service."

JOBTRAK has partnerships with more than 700 college and university career centers, MBA programs, and alumni associations. Since 1987, more than 300,000 employers have utilized the service to target their full- and part-time job openings to college students, MBA's and alumni.

The site currently is processing more than 3,000 new job openings daily and is accessed by more than 35,000 job-seeking students, MBA's and alumni each day. JOBTRAK was honored as the Entrepreneur of the Year by the state of California in 1992, and in 1996 was a semi-finalist for the prestigious National Information and Infrastructure Award.

In addition to job listing services, the UI Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office offers students and alumni a host of services, including individual advising, job search workshops, career fairs, and on-campus interview opportunities to help students reach their career objectives.

UI students can get their free password by calling 335-1023, or by visiting the Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office at 24 Phillips Hall. UI alumni may call the Alumni Association at (319) 335-3294 to receive a password as a part of a membership package.

Dufoe notes that it is actually less expensive to become an Alumni Association member than it was to pay for the former Job Bulletin subscription.
