Iowa City, UI experts discuss women's rights as human rights March 13 on cable

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A panel discussion featuring Iowa City and University of Iowa advocates for women's rights and human rights will be broadcast at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 13 on Iowa City cable television (Channel 4).

The panel discussion is a community event being conducted as part of "Global Focus: Human Rights '98," a UI and community initiative to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.N.'s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and part of programming to mark March as International Women's History Month.

Panelists will discus the Universal Declaration, women's human rights issues relating to war and reproductive rights, and programming in the Iowa City area on the connections between women's rights and human rights.

Panelists include:

-- Marilyn Cohen, executive director of the Emma Goldman Center for Women;

-- Monique DiCarlo, coordinator of the UI Women's Resource and Action Center;

-- Dorothy Paul, executive director for programs, Iowa Division, United Nations Association-USA;

-- Jael Silliman, assistant professor of women's studies at the UI.

The discussion will be moderated by Heather Shank, coordinator of the Iowa City Human Rights Commission.

The panel discussion is sponsored by Global Focus: Human Rights '98; Emma Goldman Clinic for Women; Human Rights Iowa City; Iowa City Human Rights Commission; Iowa Division, United Nations-USA; and the UI Women's Resource and Action Center.
