Crisis Center benefits from United Way drawing

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A Coralville resident donated $1,000 to the Crisis Center without spending a dime.

Yi Li, who is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Iowa, won the opportunity to choose which of the 39 Johnson County United Way agencies would receive the donation, sponsored by the UI. Li entered the drawing at the United Way booth during "Celebrate Success," the Iowa City/Coralville Chamber of Commerce Business Fair Feb. 7-8.

"We're looking forward to putting this gift to good use," says Ellen McCabe, director of the Crisis Center. The center was founded in 1970 and provides services to about 10,000 Johnson County residents. The Crisis Center operates 24-hour crisis lines and provides the Food Bank and Emergency Assistance Programs. More than 2,000 families turn to the center each year because they do not have enough food to eat.

The drawing was conducted at the Feb. 23 meeting of United Way agency directors.
