Author Stefaniak reads June 24 in Iowa Summer Writing Festival

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Author Mary Helen Stefaniak will read from her work at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24 in Shambaugh Auditorium of the University of Iowa Main Library as part of the 1998 Iowa Summer Writing Festival.

Mary Helen Stefaniak, a former fiction editor for the Iowa Review, is the author of "Self Storage and Other Stories" (New Rivers Press, 1997), and co-author, with Ruth Ahlrichs, of "The Buckwalters of Pocahontas County," a novel for children (Mid-Prairie Books, 1998).

Her stories also have appeared in anthologies and many magazines.

Stefaniak is teaching a weekend workshop and two, week-long workshops on elements of fiction writing during the during the festival.

The Iowa Summer Writing Festival, which has grown from nine classes in 1987 to about 130 workshops this year, annually attracts more than 1,000 people from all 50 states and several foreign countries. Participants take weekend and week-long classes under the direction of established writers, learning to hone their skills and explore new ideas in writing.

Nationally known authors, including many with UI and Iowa connections, are featured among the program's teachers.
