Bequest from Ida Grove couple benefits UI School of Music

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A major gift to the University of Iowa Foundation from the estate of an Ida Grove couple will help fund scholarships, lectures by visiting composers, and other projects in the University of Iowa School of Music.

The gift is from the estate of Glenn S. Millice, Jr., and Emily Dean Millice. Glenn Millice earned a bachelor's degree in music from the UI in 1935. He was the owner of Glenn S. Millice and Company, a financial consulting company in Ida Grove. Glenn Millice died in 1990; Emily Millice died in 1997.

Their bequest will enhance a fund the couple started in 1987, bringing their total UI gifts to more than $500,000. The bequest will be invested in an endowed fund, providing perpetual funding for the Glenn and Emily Millice Fund in the School of Music. The annual spendable earnings from the endowment fund will support:

Scholarships for undergraduate composition majors and assistantships for graduate students;

Commissioning of compositions from current faculty members or invited faculty;

Costs affiliated with copying musical scores and special music composition projects;

Special lectures by resident composers or teachers in composition, and occasionally to bring to campus composers to work on special projects involving the School of Music.

Some of the programs and projects made possible through the Millice Fund will be offered through the Center for New Music. The Center is a laboratory and performance extension of the School's composition area, as well as a repertory ensemble for the creation and presentation of new music in general. A portion of the original Millice fund was used to cover expenses for a new work of music commissioned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Center for New Music in 1990.

"This generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Millice will provide additional educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate composition students to grow as musicians and will enhance the Center for New Music," School of Music Director David Nelson said. "The Millices' commitment to the School of Music will have a lasting impact on our students and programs."

The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of support for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff work with alumni and friends to provide resources for scholarships, professorships, building renovations, equipment, technology, and other forms of support for the UI.
