Experimental poet Jones reads June 10 in Iowa Summer Writing Festival

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Diem Jones, an author known for his innovative combinations of photography, poetry, and essay writing will read from his work at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 in Shambaugh Auditorium as part of the 1998 Iowa Summer Writing Festival.

Jones, who is director of the master of fine arts program at St. Mary's College of California, established an international reputation as a photographer of rock'n'roll musicians before turning to writing.

He is the author of the book, "#1 Bimini Road," a photo-biographic chronicle of musician George Clinton and his band Parliament-Funkadelic during a period in the 1970s. His most recent work is a collection of poetry, entitled "Sufi Warrior," that uses new forms which he calls "Why-ku's" and "(h)e)ssays."

The Iowa Summer Writing Festival, which has grown from nine classes in 1987 to about 130 workshops this year, annually attracts more than 1,000 people from all 50 states and several foreign countries. Participants take weekend and week-long classes under the direction of established writers, learning to hone their skills and explore new ideas in writing.

Nationally known authors, including many with UI and Iowa connections, are featured among the program's teachers.
