UI state fair exhibit highlights College of Liberal Arts

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A bicycle simulator, 3D cell motility, paper-making and ceramics demonstrations are among the highlights of the University of Iowa exhibit, "Education for a Life of Learning" at the 1998 Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Aug. 13-23.

The exhibit will focus on the contributions to teaching, research and service by several departments in the College of Liberal Arts, including biological sciences, computer sciences, Asian languages and literature, psychology, anthropology, Center for the Book, art and art history, physics, archeology and social work.

Coordinated by the UI Alumni Association and University Relations, other participating units include the Office of Admissions and University Hygienic Laboratory. The display was created by audiovisual graphics staff members: Jerry Best, design artist; Diana Brayton, Todd Erickson and Juanita Ridenour, graphics specialists; and undergraduate students Chris Wilkins of Iowa City, Al Stroh, Jr. of Iowa City, and Christopher Larsen of Wellman.

Athletic schedules and admissions information will be available at the booth, in addition to a variety of other information and publications. Admissions staff and liberal arts alumni will be on hand to answer questions.

Research and innovative teaching technology by faculty and students within the college of liberal arts will be displayed. A woodfired ceramics piece by student artist Simon Levin will be on display and given away in a drawing. Visitors can register for the drawing at the booth.

Visitors to the UI booth will be able to attend a variety of interactive demonstrations on the following days:
* Ceramics demonstration, pot throwing, completed pieces, Thursday and Friday, Aug. 13 and 14;
* Physics demonstration, Saturday, Aug. 15;
* Metalsmithing, Sunday, Aug. 16;
* Physics demonstration, Monday, Aug. 17;
* Papermaking, Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 18-19;
* Body fat testing (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.), Thursday and Friday, Aug. 20-21.

The UI booth is located at the west end of the Varied Industries Building on the fairgrounds. Fair hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
