Physical therapy researchers win grants

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two researchers in the physical therapy program in the University of Iowa College of Medicine have been awarded grants to support their work.

Kathleen A. Sluka, Ph.D., assistant professor, has been awarded a three-year Arthritis Foundation Research Award to study the neurophysiological basis for relief of arthritis pain using Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). The role of both the central and the peripheral nervous systems in TENS analgesia will be investigated using an animal model of arthritis. Understanding the mechanisms of action for TENS will provide a scientific basis for its use among health care practitioners. The total award is for $180,000.

Richard K. Shields, Ph.D., associate professor, has been awarded a two-year grant from the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Spinal Cord Research Foundation, to study optimizing muscle force through adaptive control to prevent musculoskeletal changes following spinal cord injury in humans. The total award is for $98,975.
