UI's Lin Wins Actuarial Research Prize
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Sheldon Lin, associate professor of statistics and
actuarial science in the University of Iowa Division of Mathematical Sciences,
has been awarded the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Annual Prize.
The Annual Prize, which includes a cash award of $500, honors authors
of the best paper published in the SOA's refereed quarterly journal, North
American Actuarial Journal, and is given only in years when the publication's
editorial staff finds an award is merited. The paper, "Optimal Portfolio
Selection with Transaction Costs," appeared in the April 1997 issue.
Lin's co-author is Phelim P. Boyle, Fellow of the Canadian Institute of
Actuaries and director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Finance at
the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario.
The SOA is an educational, research and professional membership organization
for actuaries practicing in life and health insurance, investments, pensions,
and employee benefits. It represents more than 16,500 actuaries in Canada
and the United States.
