Women's Center offers support group for lesbian and bisexual women
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- What political choices might you make as a bisexual
woman who grew up as a person of color in a small town in Illinois? What
effect does a Buddhist background have on you as a lesbian in Iowa City?
How can bisexual and lesbian women from different ethnic, spiritual, class,
and political backgrounds talk and work with one another in community?
A new support group at the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action
Center (WRAC) is designed to explore these questions and more. "Women
in Touch II: The Community Around Us" is a curriculum developed at
Affirmations: A Gay and Lesbian Cultural Center in Detroit, Mich.. It
was created as a six-week group to be a complement to the six-week "Women
in Touch," which has been offered by the UI Women's Center every semester
since the fall of 1995.
"In 'Women in Touch,' bisexual women and lesbians discuss our personal
coming out journeys, from childhood to adult relationships," facilitator
Suzi Steffen explains. "'Women in Touch II' continues that process
of reflection, but moves us into the world of our rich and varied heritages.
We will discuss and discover how our backgrounds affect our relationships
with one another as we build community."
The support group will meet each Thursday for six weeks beginning Feb.
8. All meetings will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Women's Center,
130 N. Madison, Iowa City. To register or for more information, contact
the Women's Center at (319) 335-1486.
