UI graduates win national award as young scholars in industrial psychology

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two recent graduates of the University of Iowa College of Business Administration are sharing a major award in the field of industrial psychology for their separate contributions to the academic specialty as beginning scholars.

Deniz Ones and Vish Viswesvaran, who received their doctorates in 1993 in business administration, were chosen to receive the Early Career Achievement Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).

The award, which is typically given to one scholar a year, recognizes the research contributions of scholars who have recently received their doctorates as exemplified by publications in top journals.

Ones is currently on the faculty in the department of psychology at the University of Minnesota. Viswesvaran is on the faculty in the department of psychology at Florida International University.

They both have published extensively on topics such as the factors in job performance, the relations of personality traits and mental abilities to job performance, and the ability of integrity tests to predict future job performance.

Ones, a native of Turkey, is a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. Viswesvaran, a native of India, is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology.

Frank Schmidt, the Ralph L. Sheets Professor of Management and Organizations at the UI College of Business Administration, directed Ones' and Viswesvaran's dissertations while they were students.

They each earlier won an award for best dissertation from SIOP.
