UI graduates win national award as young scholars in industrial psychology
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two recent graduates of the University of Iowa College
of Business Administration are sharing a major award in the field of industrial
psychology for their separate contributions to the academic specialty as
Deniz Ones and Vish Viswesvaran, who received their doctorates in 1993
in business administration, were chosen to receive the Early Career Achievement
Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).
The award, which is typically given to one scholar a year, recognizes
the research contributions of scholars who have recently received their
doctorates as exemplified by publications in top journals.
Ones is currently on the faculty in the department of psychology at
the University of Minnesota. Viswesvaran is on the faculty in the department
of psychology at Florida International University.
They both have published extensively on topics such as the factors in
job performance, the relations of personality traits and mental abilities
to job performance, and the ability of integrity tests to predict future
Ones, a native of Turkey, is a graduate of Augustana College in Rock
Island, Ill. Viswesvaran, a native of India, is a graduate of the Indian
Institute of Technology.
Frank Schmidt, the Ralph L. Sheets Professor of Management and Organizations
at the UI College of Business Administration, directed Ones' and Viswesvaran's
dissertations while they were students.
They each earlier won an award for best dissertation from SIOP.
