President Coleman will give UI update to Iowa City service clubs Jan. 22

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman will give the annual "condition of the university" speech to a joint meeting of Iowa City service clubs at noon Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Highlander Supper Club.

Titled "1998 Update: A University on the Rise," Coleman's multimedia presentation reviews the UI's progress in meeting targets associated with the seven goals of its strategic plan. Those goals are comprehensive strength in undergraduate education, premier graduate and professional programs in a significant number of areas, a faculty of national and international distinction, distinguished research and scholarship, a culturally diverse and inclusive university community, strong ties between the university and external constituencies, and a high-quality academic and working environment.

The annual speech by the UI president is a tradition of more than 40 years and is designed to strengthen the "town-gown" relationship between the university and the surrounding communities, including Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Clear Creek and Solon.

"We are pleased to have President Coleman as our guest for this traditional event," said Bob Crane, president of the Iowa City Rotary Club. "It's a wonderful way for us to get together and celebrate the interdependence of the university and our communities."

Local service clubs participating in the event are: Altrusa Club of Iowa City, ABWA Golden Hawks and Grant Wood chapters, Business and Professional Women of Iowa City, Iowa City/Coralville Jaycees; Eastside, Golden K, Noon, Old Capitol, and Coralville Hawkeye Kiwanis clubs; the Noon, Host Noon, and Evening Lions clubs of Iowa City; The Optimist, Noon Optimist and Sunrise Optimist clubs of Iowa City; Morning and Noon Coralville Optimist clubs; Optimist clubs of Clear Creek/Amana, North Liberty and Solon; the Pilot Club of Iowa City, Iowa City A.M. and Noon Rotary clubs and the Rotary Club of Coralville/North Corridor; and the Old Capitol and University of Iowa Sertoma clubs.
