UI asks drivers to slow down in construction areas on Newton Road

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Slow down! Please!

That's the message from the University of Iowa department of public safety to drivers using Newton Road on the UI campus. A variety of construction projects related to the planned biomedical education and research building are in progress along Newton Road, which complicates safety for pedestrians, including children attending day care at the Greentree Child Care Center in Westlawn.

That potentially dangerous combination led Public Safety last October to announce a special effort to enforce the 15 mph speed limit. Now Public Safety Director Chuck Green has repeated his call for cooperation.

"We are still having a problem with traffic moving too fast in the construction area near the child care center," Green said. "We know that the construction work is an inconvenience, but we need the cooperation of all motorists to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially the day care children."

Public Safety officers will continue using radar to monitor traffic on Newton Road between Riverside Drive (Highway 6) and Woolfe Avenue near the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Green said.
