Climbing instruction offered for families and high school students

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two climbing programs, one for families and another for high school students, will be offered at the University of Iowa beginning Sunday, March 8. The instructional programs will use the UI Recreational Services Touch the Earth Climbing Gym in the UI Field House to teach participants basic sport climbing skills in a safe environment.

The family climbing program sessions will be from 1 to 3 p.m. each Sunday. The high school program is open to students in grade nine through 12 and will be held each Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Instruction will vary depending upon the number of sessions the participants attend.

The family program is limited to 12 participants, and the high school program is limited to eight participants. Interested persons may register at the Recreational Services Office (E216 Field House) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or call (319) 335-9293.

Each family group must have at least one adult who is the parent or guardian of the children that participate and a maximum of two children between the ages of 12 and 18. High school students who participate cannot be older than 18 years of age and must have written consent from a parent or guardian. The fee for each participant is $15 for the first session and $3 per person for subsequent sessions.

Participants will learn how to use and maintain a climbing harness; how to tie a figure eight follow-through knot on to their own climbing harness; how to use and maintain a climbing rope; how to belay using a friction belay device; how to use handholds and footholds; and how to use the proper belaying and climbing signals. All participants will take a written test and demonstrate all of the climbing and belaying techniques during the final session.

Each participant must sign a liability waiver. A parent or guardian of each minor must also sign the minor's liability waiver. Participants will also be expected to follow climbing wall rules at all times.
