Bowlsby will stay as UI director of men's intercollegiate athletics

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Bob Bowlsby, University of Iowa director of men's intercollegiate athletics, announced today that he has decided to remain with the University of Iowa. Bowlsby had been offered the athletic director position at Duke University.

"I am very pleased to be staying at the University of Iowa," Bowlsby said. "We have a number of exciting projects in athletics and campuswide, and I look forward to participating in the continued enhancement of our university."

"Duke University is a tremendous institution, and I was very impressed with all that I saw and heard during my visit," he noted. "Duke has outstanding people on their athletics staff as well as excellent leadership in its senior administration. I am confident that my family and I would have had a great experience. In the final evaluation, there were excellent professional opportunities with both positions, but my heart was at Iowa."

"Considering another position has been a difficult and awkward process for me and my family. It was exhilarating to ponder the possibilities, but ultimately, it was the people at the University of Iowa and within the state who caused us to stay. President Coleman and Vice President Rhodes are exceptional to work with, and they have been very supportive throughout the last two weeks. We have plenty of challenges before us, but I could not be more enthusiastic about the future at the University of Iowa," Bowlsby concluded.

UI President Mary Sue Coleman and Vice President for University Relations Ann Rhodes said they were pleased with Bowlsby's decision.

"President Coleman and I are very excited that Bob has decided to stay with the University of Iowa," said Rhodes. "He is simply outstanding. I'm thrilled that the university will continue to have his leadership for our men's athletic program."
