Applications sought for Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Applications are now being accepted for the 1998-99 T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship, which provides funds for UI doctoral students to conduct research outside of the United States.

The fellowship was created by the UI Graduate Council in 1993 in honor of the late
T. Anne Cleary, associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of psychological and quantitative foundations, for her strong commitment to the ideals of international education.

The competition is open to all doctoral candidates who will have completed all

pre-dissertation requirements by Sept. 15, including the comprehensive exam and approval of a dissertation topic. The award provides support primarily for travel, subsistence and/or research expenses. In some cases, stipend and/or tuition support may also be awarded. Fellowships typically provide $1,500 to $5,000, but proposals for support of up to $15,000 will be considered.

Applications are reviewed by a faculty awards committee, which makes a recommendation to the dean of the Graduate College, who makes the final selection.

Additional guidelines and application materials are available from the Office of International Programs, 120 International Center. For more information, contact Sandra Barkan, assistant dean, Graduate College, phone 335-2136; or Stephen Arum, assistant dean, International Programs, phone 335-0335.
