Hearst Foundation Creates Scholarship Fund for UI College of Nursing

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A gift of $100,000 from the Hearst Foundation, Inc. has created an endowed scholarship fund to benefit students in the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

Established through the UI Foundation, the Hearst Foundation Nursing Scholarship Fund helps support the college's program to encourage minority nurses with associate degrees to complete their B.S.N. degrees at the UI.

The students selected annually to receive the full-time tuition scholarships will be known as Hearst Scholars and will complete a one-year program. The scholarships may eventually be extended to other associate degree students who have financial need.

According to Melanie C. Dreher, dean of the College of Nursing, the scholarship endowment will help the college carry out its commitment to offer educational programs that "address the need for greater ethnic diversity in nursing."

"Helping minority nursing professionals advance in their careers is particularly important as we move into the next century of shifting sociodemographics and dramatic changes in the delivery of health care. We're deeply grateful to the Hearst Foundation for their gift to help deserving nurses complete the college's new program," Dreher said.

Applications for the Hearst Foundation Nursing Scholarships will be available from the college's Office of Student Services this spring. The first annual awards will be made later this year.

The Hearst Foundation is one of two independent private philanthropies established by William Randolph Hearst to help advance education, health and human services and culture. The Hearst Foundation has made previous gifts to the UI, including support for the International Writing Program, scholarships in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the renovation of Iowa Hall in the Museum of Natural History.

The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of support for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff work with alumni, friends, foundations and businesses to provide scholarships and other forms of support for the UI.
