Summer job fair scheduled Feb. 17; two workshops planned to help students prepare

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The annual University of Iowa Summer Employment Fair will be attended by more than 130 local, regional, and national employers offering a variety of summer employment, internship and volunteer opportunities. The Feb. 17 event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. The fair is attended by for-profit business organizations and non-profit camps and other organizations.

UI students from all majors are encouraged to attend.

"Students seek employment during the summer for a variety of reasons," noted Cindy Seyfer, assistant director in the Office of Student Financial Aid. "Some want to earn and save as much as possible for educational costs in the upcoming fall. Others wish to find a position that will offer specific professional experience and enhance their resume. Another common goal is to try on various professional roles in an effort to explore career options and define future goals.

"Whatever your employment goals are for the summer, the Summer Employment Fair offers an opportunity to speak with employers from various geographic locations offering a wide range of employment prospects," she said.

Business casual attire is encouraged for students attending the fair. It is not necessary to bring a resume but may be desirable if you are looking for specific professional opportunities, Seyfer noted.

Two workshops are planned to help students prepare for the fair. They will be Thursday, Feb. 12, and Monday, Feb. 16, at 4:30 p.m. in the Indiana Room of the IMU. In addition to the workshops, students can learn more about the summer employment search process and the employers attending the fair by stopping by Career Development Services in 315 Calvin Hall or calling (319) 335-1385.

Career Development Services also maintains information on summer employment opportunities with employers who are unable to attend the event.

The fair is sponsored by Career Development Services, Student Financial Aid, Student Disability Services, Special Support Services, Academic Advising Center, and Liberal Arts Academic Programs. For more information, contact Seyfer at (319) 335-1460.
