Orphan dog will seek new home at Dec. 10 performance of 'Annie' in Hancher Auditorium

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- One family at the Thursday, Dec. 10 performance of "Annie" at the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium may go home with more than smiles on their faces: They may acquire a new member of the family. An orphan dog from the Iowa City/Coralville Animal Shelter will be featured on stage during the performance, and then made available for adoption.

Annie's pal, Sandy, is not the only dog in the 20th-anniversary production of "Annie." A scene in Act I calls for a stray mutt to be carried on stage. In the performance at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 the "mutt" will be an actual stray from the shelter, looking for a new family.

After the dog's appearance in Act I, representatives of the animal shelter will take the dog to a table in the lobby at intermission, in hopes that an individual or family in the audience will apply for adoption.

Tickets to all eight Dec. 8-13 Hancher performances of "Annie" are available from the Hancher box office.

Hancher box office hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday. From the local calling area or outside Iowa, dial (319) 335-1160.
