UI professor to discuss human rights aspects of changing gender

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa economics professor Deirdre McCloskey will speak about the human rights aspects of changing gender at a UI Ethics Seminar Friday, Dec. 4.

The seminar "Crossing from Don to Deirdre: How the University Honored Hu(wo)man Rights" will be 12:15 p.m. in Room W401 in the Pappajohn Business Administration Building.

Drawing on her experience in changing from a man to a woman, McCloskey will explore the human rights granted or not granted to people on the basis of gender. The UI, says McCloskey, has the nation's best policy on discrimination against people on the basis of gender identity, but more awareness is still needed on campus.

The seminar is sponsored by the College of Business Administration, the UI Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry and International Programs.

UI Ethics Seminars are focusing on human rights as part of Global Focus: Human Rights '98, UI's yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Human Rights.
