New UI homepage is more customer focused

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa has redesigned its homepage on the World Wide Web to make it easier to use for people both inside and outside the university. The new homepage features information links for current students, prospective students, faculty and staff; alumni, friends, parents and visitors; employers and job seekers, and for patients of the UI Hospitals and Clinics. It can be visited at:

"We wanted the homepage to be more customer focused," explained Chris Pruess, UI Webmaster and leader of the web page redesign committee. "The people who use our homepage probably don't really know how the university is organized, but they know who they are. That's why we've identified our main links as we have."

Now, for example, homepage visitors who click on "Prospective Students" will find information on admissions procedures, academic programs, costs, financial aid, and the UI's on-line application. Visitors who click on "Patients" will find information on phone numbers and contacts for scheduling appointments at the UI's outpatient care clinics. Clicking on "Employers and Job Seekers" will give information about job openings at the UI or about the availability of UI students for internships."

The new homepage has a text only option that will save an extra click for people who do not wish to see graphics or have vision problems and need to be able to control the size of the text, Pruess noted.

In addition, the graphics used on the homepage were designed for a 15-inch computer monitor, which is the most common size used by current and prospective students, according to a survey completed as part of the redesign process. More than 1,500 users responded to the survey.

The UI homepage also features a welcome from UI President Mary Sue Coleman, a "Search A to Z" function, a link for answers to frequently asked questions about the UI, and links for the UI's annual calendar, its phone directory, Hawkeye sports, and the arts.
