WHAT: Fourth annual White Coat Ceremony for incoming UI medical
WHERE: Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus
WHEN: Friday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa College of Medicine's White
Coat Ceremony part of the college's orientation program will
welcome 175 new UI medical students on Friday, Aug. 21. The ceremony encourages
students to demonstrate integrity, honor and compassion as they learn and
After remarks including a keynote address by Dr. Richard M. Caplan,
professor emeritus of dermatology, students will be ceremonially cloaked
with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family,
friends and faculty, they will recite the Oath of Hippocrates. A reception
will follow in the Hancher Auditorium lobby.
The ceremony began in 1995 with support from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation,
which is dedicated to advancing compassion and humanism in medicine. The
foundation also has assisted the college in developing other programs that
stress values alongside excellence in medical science.
