College of Education sponsors "diversity social" May 1
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa College of Education will
host a "diversity social" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 1
as part of an ongoing series of events to raise awareness and increase
diversity in the college.
The social, which was planned and organized by the college's diversity
committee, will be held in the Jones Commons (Room N300 ) of the Lindquist
Center. Offices in the college will be encouraged to close during the event's
Donald Yarbrough, associate dean in the College of Education, says the
social event is designed as an opportunity for faculty and staff of the
college to discuss the complex issues of diversity in an informal way.
"We've found that throughout the college, there is a desire and
a willingness to talk about diversity and what it means to us," Yarbrough
says. "We hope the social event will allow staff and faculty to continue
that discussion in a relaxed, informal setting."
The social is the second such event sponsored by the college this semester.
In February the college closed its offices for a three-hour "Diversity
Information Fair" that gave faculty and staff the opportunity to explore
issues of diversity based on race, sex, culture, religion, and sexual orientation.
Yarbrough says the February diversity fair has attracted attention from
other programs, departments and colleges on campus and may serve as a blueprint
for similar efforts elsewhere on campus.
