WRAC Coffeehouse attracts local, out-of-town talent

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The fourth monthly Coffeehouse sponsored by the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center will be held Friday, May 1 at the First Christian Church, 217 Iowa Ave. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.

The May event features both local and out-of-town talent. Local singer/songwriter Jennifer Danielson will open the evening. Members of the UI's undergraduate literary magazine "Earthwords" will read from the 1998 issue before a short open microphone program.

A theater group from Columbia, Mo., will conclude the night with "Shades of Woman," a retelling of the Biblical stories of Mary Magdalene and Queen Esther. The Grace Kavvanah Sacred Theater Troupe presented this original performance to a packed house in Columbia on March 19 at the opening event for the University of Missouri's Women's History Month. The performance combines singing, drumming, spoken word, and poetry.

Geta LeSeur, professor of women's studies at the University of Missouri, calls Shades "creative, inspiring, empowering and wonderful." University of Missouri English Professor Catherine Parke says Shades is a "stunning ritual performance...tremendously moving, effective, and educational."

Organizers are requesting a donation of $2 to $5 at the door to cover the costs of bringing the troupe to Iowa City. For more information about the Coffeehouse, contact the Women's Center at (319) 335-1486.
