Iowa Baseball Pavilion dedicated in honor of Diane Mitchell
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A dedication ceremony for the Iowa Baseball Pavilion,
built in memory of Diane Mitchell of Iowa City, will be held at noon on
Saturday, May 2, 1998, prior to the baseball doubleheader between the University
of Iowa and Northwestern University. The public is invited.
Diane Mitchell was the wife of former Hawkeye football player Bob Mitchell
and mother of Hawkeye student-athletes David, Mark and Brian Mitchell.
She died Dec. 27, 1996, in an automobile accident while en route to Texas
to watch the Hawkeye football team compete in the Alamo Bowl. She was 56.
During her life, Mitchell never missed an inning or a down of her sons'
games and was always their biggest supporter.
Diane Mitchell received a B.S.N. degree from the University of Iowa
in 1965, and was a nurse at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
The baseball pavilion will be used for receptions and other special
events held in conjunction with UI athletic events. The pavilion was constructed
during the Iowa Baseball Clubhouse expansion, a project made possible through
private gifts to the University of Iowa Foundation.
The UI Foundation is the preferred channel of support for private contributions
to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff members work with
alumni and friends to provide support for a broad range of projects and
programs at the UI.
