UI Family Care Center, North Liberty, expands patient services

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Less than a year since its opening, the UI Family Care Center, North Liberty, is significantly expanding its patient programs.

New services available immediately include:

*On-site social service interventions. Services are provided by Jim Cone, a licensed independent social worker at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), on an as-needed basis. Appointments are available immediately.

*UI HealthWorks services. UI Family Care Center and UI HealthWorks staff are available to consult with employers regarding their specific employee health needs. These services include pre-employment physicals (OSHA, DOT), laboratory studies, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and immunizations.

Three additional services will be available beginning in May:

*Massage therapy will be provided by registered nurse Cheryl Schnoebelen, a licensed massage therapist, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., beginning May 5.

*Psychiatry outreach services will be provided by Dr. Gerald Clancy, a UI staff psychiatrist, on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., starting May 7.

*Nutrition counseling will be provided one Monday per month, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., by Kathy Mellen of the UIHC Food and Nutrition Department, starting May 18.

Dermatology services continue to be available through a dermatology satellite clinic held Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. North Liberty dermatology appointments may be made by calling (319) 384-9120.

Also, women wishing to receive a breast cancer screening will have another opportunity when the UI Mobile Mammography van revisits the UI Family Care Center, North Liberty, on June 4. Some patients may qualify for financial assistance through the Iowa Department of Public Health Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

The UI Family Care Center, which opened in August, 1997, is located at 3 Lions Drive in North Liberty, on Highway 965 across from the Quail Creek Golf Course. It is affiliated with UI Community Medical Services Inc., a for-profit entity formed by the UIHC and the UI College of Medicine. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thursdays, when the clinic remains open until 7 p.m.
