UI to test new steam turbine at North Campus Parking Ramp Saturday, April 18

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa will be blowing off steam this Saturday, April 18. But it's for a good cause -- to clean and test the high pressure steam piping that serves a new steam turbine in the Chilled Water Plant at the North Campus Parking Ramp.

There will be about 12 different releases of steam, each lasting about 15 minutes, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The length of the steam releases will allow for the opening and closing of valves and about five minutes at full pressure.

A safety engineer will be on site to conduct noise tests, but UI officials said they do not expect the noise level to exceed 75 decibels. The noise level from the steam releases will be softer than the UI Power Plant steam whistle that blows each day at 8 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Because of the testing, the upper level of the North Campus Parking Ramp will be closed, as will the basketball courts behind Burge Residence Hall. The elevator on the south end of the parking ramp will be operational but will not access the upper level of the ramp. The north stairwell from the parking ramp to Capitol Street (Anne Cleary Walkway) will be closed. Persons parking in the ramp and needing access to Capitol Street should exit the ramp at the cashier's booth and use the stairs north of North Hall or use the elevator in North Hall to the third floor.
