WRAC offers social change training seminar: 'Training the Trainer'
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University
of Iowa is offering a weekend-long social change training seminar, "Training
the Trainer," Friday, April 24, through Sunday, April 26. The workshop
is designed for people who train or supervise staff members or volunteers;
lead workshops, in-service meetings or training seminars; or who may facilitate
staff, board, or strategic planning meetings. The seminar is open to the
public. No prior experience is necessary.
Trainers for the workshop are Erika Thorne and Betsy Raasch-Gilman,
who facilitate the Training of Social Action Trainers workshop in close
association with Training for Change, a social activism training center
in Philadelphia. Graduates from this training seminar will be eligible
to participate in advanced workshops offered by Training for Change.
The seminar will begin with dinner at the Women's Resource and Action
Center at 6 p.m., Friday, April 24. Workshops will be held at the Iowa
Memorial Union on Saturday and Sunday. The fee to attend is $50, but there
are a limited number of scholarships available. Some meals will be provided.
Child care is available, but those interested in child care must make
arrangements by calling (319) 335-1486 by April 17.
"Many organizations rely heavily on volunteers or their membership
to provide direct service, raise funds, and organize. This seminar is
designed to help groups be more effective in training and inspiring their
volunteers," said Monique DiCarlo, director of the Women's Center.
The goals of the seminar are to increase participants' capacity to step
outside of their process or experiences, and, by using video and personal
feedback, to analyze how effective they are as trainers, DiCarlo added.
Co-sponsors for "Training the Trainer" are Opportunity at
Iowa, Iowa Center for AIDS Resources & Education, Iowa City Federation
of Labor, American Federation of Teachers, Rape Victim Advocacy Program,
Environmental Advocates, Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Iowa Socialist
Party, and the UI School of Social Work.
