Public invited to free viewing of film about Mahatma Gandhi April 19

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Several University of Iowa student groups and academic programs are sponsoring a free public screening of "The Making of the Mahatma," a film about the early life of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa. The movie will be shown Sunday, April 19 from 12:30-3 p.m. in Room 101 of the Becker Communication Studies Building.

"The Making of the Mahatma," a major motion picture directed by Shyam Benegal, traces the evolution of Mohandas Gandhi to the "Mahatma." Through focusing on the early life of Gandhi in South Africa, the film attempts to depict the transformation of a simple man to one who would later be described as "the great soul" and earn the title of "Mahatma."
