UI Museum of Natural History sponsors April 19 lecture
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History
will present a lecture, "Spring Things," at 2 p.m., Sunday, April
19 in Macbride Hall.
The lecture, part of the Museum' Afternoon With a Scientist lecture
series, will be delivered by Dean Abel, mycologist, author and photographer.
Abel is the co-author of A Guide to Kansas Mushrooms, as well
as chairman of the North American Mycological Association (NAMA) Photography
Committee and director of the annual NAMA Photo Contest. According to Abel,
the secret to finding morel mushrooms in the spring is knowing when to
look, as revealed by such indicators as the blooming of certain spring
wildflowers. The slide program will feature Abel's photographs of many
common Iowa wildflowers and mushrooms, as well as a lesson about distinguishing
the edible from the inedible varieties.
The program is free and open to the public. For further information
or to be placed on the Museum of Natural History mailing list, call David
Brenzel, program coordinator, at 319-335-0482.
