Celebration to mark first phase of improvements to UI Softball Complex

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The public is invited to attend the "Turn on the Lights" celebration for the Grand Stand Campaign for Iowa Women's Softball Thursday, April 23 at the University of Iowa Softball Complex.

The celebration will be held at approximately 5:30 p.m., following the first game of the Hawkeyes' double-header against Creighton University. Admission to the games will be free. The complex is located at the intersections of Highway 6 and Mormon Trek Boulevard in Coralville.

"Turn on the Lights" will celebrate the completion of the first phase of improvements to the intercollegiate diamond within the Iowa Softball Complex, including new bleachers and lighting. The event will recognize Musco Lighting and its president, Joe Crookham, for the company's generous gift in kind of the design, manufacture and installation of light fixtures. Crookham is a graduate of the UI College of Business Administration.

The celebration will be hosted by UI Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Director Christine H. B. Grant, Grand Stand Campaign Committee Co-chairs Darold Albright and UI Softball Head Coach Gayle Blevins, and Jana Egeland, assistant director of development for Women's Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Iowa Foundation. Representatives from Musco Lighting of Oskaloosa will be special guests at the event.

The Musco gift, valued at $82,000, helped put the Grand Stand Campaign for Iowa Softball more than halfway toward its goal of $1 million to fund upgrades to the softball facility. High-level contributors will be recognized by named areas in the complex, including locker rooms, a press box and other new features. These improvements will be made following the 1998 season.

According to Jana Egeland, Musco's contribution is the largest gift in kind ever received by UI Women's Intercollegiate Athletics. Musco Lighting designs and manufactures permanent and temporary lighting for sports, recreation and other large facilities and events worldwide. The company's past and present projects include the Rose Bowl, Super Bowls, the Daytona Speedway and the rededication of the Statue of Liberty.

The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of support for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff work with alumni, friends and businesses to provide funds for facilities improvements, scholarships and other forms of support for the UI.
