Iowa Men's Basketball Coach Tom Davis to retire after next year

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa men's basketball coach Tom Davis will retire after the 1998-99 season, Bob Bowlsby, men's athletic director, announced at a Thursday afternoon news conference.

"I am pleased that Tom Davis has agreed to continue as our head basketball coach through the 1998-99 season. With an excellent in-coming recruiting class and an outstanding schedule, it should be an exciting year," Bowlsby said.

Davis will retire as Iowa's all-time winningest basketball coach, and the year between now and his retirement will allow him to receive some well-deserved thank yous for his work here, Bowlsby added.

Bowlsby noted that the advance notification of Davis' retirement will allow for a "quality search process" and a more orderly transition to the new coaching staff.

"I expect to be able to hire an excellent basketball coach. The University of Iowa is a terrific institution in an outstanding conference," Bowlsby said. "Our program is well-funded, we have exceptional facilities, we enjoy a very supportive environment on campus, and we have the very best fans in college athletics. I anticipate a large candidate pool that should afford us the opportunity to hire a person of high integrity with outstanding credentials and a proven record of high achievement."

Vice President of University Relations Ann Rhodes said: "The entire University community appreciates the years of service Tom has provided our institution and is particularly pleased that Tom has elected to remain the head coach of our men's basketball program for the 1998-99 season."
