Van carrying UI employees involved in accident near Cedar Rapids
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A van carrying Cedar Rapids area employees of the
University of Iowa was involved in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday
morning, April 1. As of 9:30 a.m., details were still unconfirmed, but
it appears that 10 UI employees were in the van at the time of the accident,
which occurred at about 7:10 a.m. on Interstate 380 about one mile south
of Highway 30.
Early reports from the Cedar Rapids Police Department indicated that
all 10 were taken to Cedar Rapids hospitals for treatment. Two people
were taken to Mercy Hospital by air ambulance and a third was taken to
Mercy by regular ambulance. The other seven were taken to St. Luke's Hospital.
Reports on the nature or extent of the employees' injuries were not available
as of 9:30 a.m.
The University's Parking and Transportation Department has 47 vans that
are used for employee "van pools." Currently there are about
650 UI employees who ride in the van pools on a regular basis. The vans
are leased to the employees, who pay a mileage-based fee to cover the cost
of operating the vans.
