UroSurge, Inc. to fund department of urology fellowship

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- UroSurge, Inc., a medical device company headquartered at the University of Iowa Oakdale Research Park, will fund a three-year fellowship totaling $75,000 in the department of urology in the UI College of Medicine.

For the first two years, the fellowship will be held by Dr. Tomas L. Griebling. Griebling will spend the fellowship conducting research in the field of geriatric urology, specifically incontinence and reconstructive surgery.

"Given the large elderly population in Iowa and the fact that urinary incontinence is a relatively common problem among the elderly, this fellowship will help address a condition that we are seeing more and more frequently," says Dr. Richard D. Williams, Rubin H. Flocks Chair, professor and head of the department of urology. "We appreciate the support of UroSurge for our initiatives in this area."

UroSurge, Inc. was founded in 1993 with a charter to develop unique medical devices for the treatment of conditions of the genito-urinary tract. UroSurge was part of the UI Technology Innovation Center (TIC) incubator before moving to permanent quarters at the research park.

Griebling, a native of Mason City, received his bachelor's degree from Wartburg College and his medical degree from the UI. Last year, he served as chief resident in the department of urology at the UI.

The grant was made through the UI Foundation, the preferred channel of giving to the UI.
