Children in Make-A-Wish Foundation to meet Iowa Hawkeyes Sept. 13

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A group of 14 Eastern Iowa children recovering from serious illnesses and their families will have a chance to meet some of the coaches and key players of the 1997 Iowa Hawkeye football team Saturday, Sept. 13 during a day-long outing at the Iowa-Tulsa game at Kinnick Stadium.

The children will first attend a tailgate luncheon at 11 a.m. in the UI Recreation Building. The children, their families and Student Alumni Ambassador escorts will then attend the game, scheduled to begin at 1:05 p.m. Immediately following the game, the children will be the guests of the UI cheerleaders, dance team, Herky Hawk, and Iowa football players and coaches at the northeast corner of the UI Recreation Building.

The event, called Gameday and now in its third year and recognized last spring as a program of the year by the District V Student Alumni Association/Student Foundation (SAA/SF), is organized by the Student Alumni Ambassadors of the UI Alumni Association. The student organization works with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide children between seven and 18 years of age with an opportunity to see an Iowa Football Game and to meet the players and coaches.

None of the events in the outing will be open to the general public. The SAA/SF Network is a program of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) that seeks to promote the involvement of students in alumni relations, communications and philanthropy.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing activities for terminally and severely ill children and their families. Major sponsors of Gameday III are: the UI athletic department, Wendy's Restaurants of Iowa City, Hargrave McEleny Motors, Old Capitol Screen Printers, Eicher Florist, Nissan of Iowa City, University of Iowa Book Store, Big Ten Rentals, Advanced Auto Service, Iowa City Hy-Vee South, JC Penny Co., Cub Foods and the Iowa City Holiday Inn.

A list of contacts and a schedule for the Sept. 13 outing at Kinnick Stadium may be obtained by contacting Jeff Liebermann at 319-335-3288.
