Oxford University philosopher to speak at UI

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Derek Parfit, a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University, will visit the University of Iowa to deliver the annual Gustav Bergmann Philosophy Lecture Thursday, Nov. 6, on the topic, "Why Does the Universe Exist?" The lecture, which is sponsored by the UI department of philosophy in memory of its long-time faculty member Gustav Bergmann, is free and open to the public and will take place at 8 p.m. at Shambaugh Auditorium.

Parfit, who is a Visiting Professor at Harvard University this semester, is the author of "Reasons and Persons," one of the most widely-read books in philosophy in recent years. He is a member of the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Immediately following Parfit's lecture, the department will hold a reception in the North Room of the Iowa Memorial Union.

For further information, contact Laird Addis, 335-0021, or Jan Kleinschmidt, 335-0020, both in the department of philosophy.
