Vince Nelson appointed director of UI Alumni Association

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Vince Nelson has been appointed executive director of the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Nelson, who has been interim director of the association for the past 18 months, was appointed by UI President Mary Sue Coleman and the UI Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Nelson takes over the helm of an organization with 47,000 members. As executive director he will manage a full-time staff of 18 as well as a dozen part-time student workers and will oversee the organization's $2.1 million annual budget. He also serves as publisher of the Iowa Alumni Quarterly.

"I am delighted that Vince Nelson was recommended and selected as executive director of the UI Alumni Association," said Coleman. "I have worked with Vince for two years and find him to be an enthusiastic and innovative leader. The strong relationships between the alumni association and the university are virtually unique in my experience and are a great strength for this university. I look forward to many productive years working with Vince and the association to serve the needs of our alumni."

"Vince Nelson is dedicated to serving both the alumni membership and the university, which I believe are essential for a successful alumni association," said Willard L. Boyd III, president of the UI Alumni Association board of directors. "The board looks forward to the leadership and vision Vince will provide as we move forward with our strategic plan."

A native of Clarinda, Nelson is a long-time alumni administrator. Following a two-year stint as associate director of alumni and admissions at Drake University in Des Moines, he served from 1979-1987 as director of alumni and parent programs at Drake. From 1988 to 1996, he was associate executive director of the UI Alumni Association.

During his tenure at the UI, Nelson has managed the growth of several alumni association programs. Most recently, he has worked with both the alumni association staff and board members to implement an organizational strategic planning process.

"Our mission is to provide services as a gateway for alumni to strengthen their relationships with one another and with the university," he said. "We must continually review our programs and services to ensure that the alumni association remains a viable organization for its members and to ensure that we provide alumni and friends with the opportunity to connect with the university."

"The alumni association is a bridge to the university," he added. "Everything we do should enhance and advance the University of Iowa."
